“Toys Were Not For Us, Kid”

16 x 20 inches

Acrylic paint and ink on stretched canvas.

This piece is an expression of a child who was never given the opportunity to be that, a child. Created for the children who had to grow up at an early age due to familial trauma or being given more responsibility than was due them. The curved neck of the giraffe, meant to be a representation of the Toys R Us mascot, is indicative of a child never reaching their full height or potential in that stage of their life. On the right are images that convey a family unit. A mother in deep fuschia, a father in blue, and a child in purple. They are wrapped in an embrace. This piece isn’t the childhood trauma but a telling of it, from parents to child, and the promise to not pass along cycles of brokenness.
