This piece is meant to represent both the deep beauty that is found and has always existed on the continent of Africa as well as the brokenness that exists as a result of colonization. In the center are diagonal flows of acrylic paints mixed with gold leaf. Spend some time observing the flows of the paint.

What do you see?

To an open eye and mind, there is an infinite number of abstract shapes and stories taking place.

On the outside of that flow, are stark and contrasted lines. This juxtaposition represents what Mama Africa and her people have experienced. A deep intricate beauty as well as a deep and sorrowful breaking.

As an artist, I wanted this piece to have an overall sense of hope and dignity that conveys restoration. A great flow is something that cannot be stopped or prevented and in making the diagonal center fluid and the outside stark and calculated, I hoped to express the desire for the beauty, culture, and deep wisdom of the African people to grow and spread until it fills every crevice of the continent.
